The Typical Day Question

Part II of a Multipart Series

This is a follow up to my first post last week. Since that post which I was hoping would reduce time for coffee chats, I’ve gotten more than two dozen cold LinkedIn requests for coffee chats. Not exactly the outcome for which I’d hoped, but, hey, glad some people liked it. Next on the career advice agenda — one of my least favorite generic questions.

What does your typical day look like?

I don’t have an easy answer for this one, particularly because I spend around 1/3 of my time in Africa, mostly in Nairobi, and the rest in the US or Europe. Instead, here’s what today looked like (from the BHI office in Cambridge after 7:45AM):

6:12AM EST Wake up to WhatsApp messages from three of our Africa-based CEOs on various topics, one seeking opinion on potential Series B investors (3:12AM), another to tell me I forgot to sign a board resolution (4:56AM) and another warning that something operational was in the process of/had gone off the rails (5:46AM). Already behind! Short email triage. Gym, shower, head to work.

7:45AM EST Arrive at our office for some more email triage. Scan my calendar to remind myself what’s on the agenda for the day and what documents I should have already read in advance of my calls…

8:00AM EST Skype with an entrepreneur in Kenya about her seed round. We’ve been chatting for a few months about her digital lending business. Blue Haven is Series A focused, but I try to spend time with promising entrepreneurs that might be a good fit for us in later rounds. Better to get to know someone outside of a high-intensity fundraising process and show them we’re value add (or at least kinda know what we’re talking about).

8:36AM (6 minutes late) Phone call with board members to discuss the best approach to raising debt for one of our non-bank financial companies. Securitization or raise on balance sheet debt? Will have to review a model with Grace and Sarah later, but got enough information for us to come to a position for the in-person meeting in a few weeks. Number crunching, the glamorous part of the job…just kidding.

9:47AM (17 min late) Call portfolio company CEO to discuss a bridge round closing shortly that has been hanging around since December. The deal has been held up by Mauritian and South African regulatory questions, which allowed us to catch a mistake (and by “us” I mean our brand-new associate Sarah — earning her keep already!). Phew.

11:00AM. COFFEE!

11:10AM. Pipeline catch up with the team. We run through all the interesting deals we’ve seen in the last couple of weeks — one in Rwanda in particular. It’s good to catch up after being on the road for most of January. Then on to review the portfolio management work that BHI’s Associates lead. We walk through the model they just finished building with one company to help sort timing for their next fundraise. Next, one of our later stage companies just hired a fantastic CFO after a two year search, but needs a model review since Grace was managing this in the absence of a finance person for the past year or so. And finally, every now and again we make a seed investment, which can mean lots of hands-on portfolio work. I need to make sure we have bandwidth before promising resources to one of our seed-stage West African companies. Remember there are only three of us!

12:03PM Most of Africa is at dinner, meaning I can finally dig into emails. We are doing a deep dive on new areas of distributed energy which may become more investable as the market for mini grids opens up with new regulations and government subsidies. I try and track down some people that actually know what they’re talking about to meet with in Kenya (there for all of March as is most of the team).

12:17PM Brainstorm what we want in a job description for someone to represent the off grid solar space in West Africa. The trade organization, the Global Off Grid Lighting Association (GOGLA) has gotten lots of funding and done an awesome job nurturing the east African ecosystem. Our investment in PEG Africa (focused on the smaller countries that make up the West side of the continent), has been suffering from a lot of the growing pains we saw on the east coast. Governments aren’t quite sure how distributed systems fit into broader electrification plans and a private company on its own shouldn’t be the only advocate for self-interested outcomes. As a number of other companies move into the region, cohesive industry representation makes sense. Blue Haven has a donor advised fund, separate from the commercial pool of capital my team manages, which we occasionally draw on to fund ecosystem building projects like this one. Let’s see if we can convince a few other investors to support the initiative.

12:58PM Brief brain break for Twitter. World has not fallen apart. Lunch with the team. Back to work.

1:36PM Read a draft investment memo and review the model in its 20th iteration. Every time we make an investment we take the management team’s numbers and sense-check their assumptions, making adjustments where necessary. Things like how quickly and at what cost customers get acquired, the speed with which COGS comes down, spending on overhead too low or too high. It’s an art getting to our best guess on how much revenue a company will earn and what they’ll spend to get there. The only sure thing is that we’re ALWAYS wrong. Directional correctness is the goal, which means identifying areas where unrealistic assumptions could jeopardize a business’s ability to eventually reach profitability or attract more capital to get there.

2:30PM Chat with a foundation endowment interested in our direct investing work in Africa — may be a good future co-investor? Maybe not. Mute my phone while sneaking into a Lyft for next meeting.

3:30PM Coffee with OPIC team to hear the latest on their lending activities. Hope that some of our early stage companies might be interesting to their portfolio for impact. It is so hard to find debt, particularly for on lending when a company is in the process of proving itself.

4:48PM Discuss a list of career blogs we’ve now promised the internet we will write and figure out which BHI team member will write what.

5:12PM Make sure I didn’t miss any emails that need immediate attention prior to when our portfolio companies wake up. Reread convertible note investment document from our lawyer and make sure a final draft gets out for the morning EAT.

6:17PM Review board deck for a board call tomorrow morning to pick a Series B term sheet and investors. Remember I never really answered that CEO this morning and draft long WhatsApp response with thoughts. Think about how the myriad of ways I can do better tomorrow…

This felt a little self-absorbed to chronical, but I wanted to prove how boring it can be (to some). People tend to lionize the life of an impact investor. Today did not include an uplifting site visit to an off-grid home where children study serenely under a solar-powered light paid for with M-Pesa. Nor was I visiting an unbanked shop keeper in a dusty part of Uganda with a high-tech POS system or cute kids in an affordable school. Mostly I sat in my office on the phone, reviewing word documents and excel spreadsheets. I get to think about problems outside the mainstream, but my day to day activities are kind of the same as at any old fund.

Maybe we will include a day in the field later, but don’t have any illusions that #impactinvestinglife is a joyful parade of solar panels and low-income families thanking you for their small business loans. I’ve heard my industry peers lament when they are feeling disconnected from the underlying work after too many office days in a row. I spend a fair bit of time in the offices and branches of our portfolio companies, but that still only adds up to around a month a quarter. I really like the order of numbers, spreadsheets, memo sections and score cards, even though most of them end up being wrong a month or two into our investments. I like listening to entrepreneurs, how they think about their business, what they are hopeful for and what challenges they face over time. My job is hard for different reasons than that of our founders and operators, different than technical assistance roles and different than field building and impact measurement, but it works for me. Think hard about what gets you out of bed in the morning and dig into the minutiae of the real activities of roles you’re considering.
